Greenwood Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
How to make a skunk proof fence or barrier

Skunks are the small-sized mammals belonging to the mephitidae family. Skunks are generally black and white in color having strips, spots or curvy patterns on their furry bodies. Most commonly found the size of skunks is equal to the size of house cats. Though, they are found in many regions of the world but they exist in large numbers in Canada, the United States of America, Mexico and the Philippines. Skunks have the ability of discharging a smell with a strong odor that they use to keep the predators away from them. Skunks will not attack humans in any way until unless they are disturbed or threatened. Because they are omnivores so they could approach your fields or gardens or even your houses in search of their food. Being nocturnal, they are most probably to go in search of their food at night when most of the people are asleep, and it could be troublesome to be aware of their presence at your place after a long time. In order to avoid them, the fences or barriers build properly around your property could be helpful.

Skunk proof fences or barriers:

Length of fence:

It is a known fact about skunks that like other rodents they are not so good at climbing. So, in order to keep the skunks away from your house or garden, you don't need to have so long fences around it, rather the fences of about six feet to eighteen inches would be enough.

Material of the fence:

These rodents can chew various materials in search of their food. So, the fences made of materials like wood, debris piles or rocks could be chewed or broke by skunks. These materials should be avoided and the fences of metal or plastic would be preferable.

Underground installation:

Where they lack the ability of good climbers, at the same time they have mastery in digging the ground. Although you have fences around your place but the skunks could enter it by digging down the ground. To get rid of this problem, it is preferable to install skunks 2 or 3 inches beneath the ground.

Mesh wires:

Installing fences below the ground would also be ineffective at times. Skunks are very good at digging, they can easily dig down the ground of any sort of soils, so installing the mesh wires below the ground with the long length could be beneficial in this situation.

Skunk repellent fences:

Placing the skunk repellents on the fences around your property could help you keep the skunks away. Spraying spices such as cayenne pepper or black pepper could keep them away. Installing strong lights that would disturb the skunks in the darkness of night would also be useful. Further, spraying your fences with the material that might have citrus smell will also keep the skunks away from your property because skunks do not like such smells.

Bottom line:

Skunks would not harm humans by attacking them but they would be dangerous because they carry the disease of rabies with them and they could also be the destroyers of your property by digging in it, chewing it or by littering everywhere by their feces. So the installation of proper skunk proof fences and barriers is necessary to be safe from such problems.
